Even Silicon Valley is shaken in 2026 — agent orchestration is the year's one skill. 2026 opened heavy. The last few weeks felt rough. Not just for me. **Silicon Valley as a whole is tense right now.** The day after Christmas, Karpathy posted: *"This is the first time I've felt left behind as a programmer."* New models pouring in — Opus 4.5 and others — and the sense that *if I used them well I'd be doing much better, but I don't know how to actually use them yet.* One post, and the SV engineering community wobbled. Eight years at Meta and even I had the *"this could happen to me overnight"* thought. The conclusion that settled out: **for 2026, the one skill that matters most is agent orchestration.** Not just *using* a model. Not just *keeping up*. The ability to compose multiple agents into a single converging outcome — *that* is what differentiates.
