Silicon Valley extracts value through two simultaneous forces — fear of falling, and dream of rising. Silicon Valley pays a lot. It also extracts every dollar of that pay back from the worker. Free food and ping-pong aren't a counterweight — they're a backdrop. 51% of employees self-reported a mental-health diagnosis, 57% experienced burnout. The mechanism is **two psychological loops running at once**. **Fear of falling.** Every six months a relative performance grade lands. The contract has an at-will-employment clause stamped on it. Anything below "Meets Expectations" triggers a daily-report PIP or outright termination. Meta laid off 21,000 in 2023 — over 15% of headcount. **Dream of rising.** One promotion ≈ ~50% comp jump. Facebook E3 $190K → E4 $300K → E5 $380K → E6 $580K. Promotion isn't a title change; it's a digit-shift. A worker carrying both loads at once — fear of falling and dream of rising — will run themselves into the ground. The system was built to produce exactly that outcome. The company's accounting works because what the employee delivers exceeds what they cost by the same margin. **Two faces of one system.**
