I switched from math to computer science at the end of sophomore year. Starting late meant that when I applied for internships I had no experience and no projects to show. When nobody would hire me, I walked into university labs and asked directly: you don't have to pay me, just let me work. The machine-learning lab that said yes is where I used my math background to build a model predicting what pitch a baseball pitcher would throw next. Nobody hands you the first line of a résumé.
