Silicon Valley's seniors don't work for the money. They work to prove their own worth. There's an engineer on my team making over two million a year. He still grinds every day. When I asked why, he said, *"because it's the only way I know how to live."* Not for the paycheck — for the next, better engineer he could be. The senior leaders here mostly run the same way. Comp isn't the variable; the variable is whether you can prove your worth to yourself. I started here just trying to make rent. Somewhere along the line the goal shifted from *staying alive* to *proving I'm worth being here.* One caveat: there's no end-state. The goal never gets satisfied.
