Kakao's update surfaces a real tension — messenger, social, or business platform? What I see in Kakao's latest update, as a 7-year Instagram engineer. **One**: the *attempt itself* is notable. They clearly knew this would draw criticism, and the fact that **Korean big-corp leadership made this call is genuinely surprising in a good way.** **Two**: in Big Tech this is routine. Instagram pushed a Reels-centric feed about 8 months ago, caught heavy criticism, and rolled it back fast. **Three**: this should prompt Kakao to reflect on its own identity. **Is KakaoTalk a messenger? A social network? A business platform?** The reaction makes one thing obvious — it's already more than friend-to-friend chat (open chat, business). **Four**: I'm very curious what the topline metric shapes up to be, and which metric the team is optimizing for. Updates this big sometimes get pushed by leadership conviction, but the resolution is **data-driven** — and *which* data is the open question.
