To shift a difficult boss, three moves —
build warmth first, speak in facts second, ask back third.
The single most common "I'm going to quit" story is "my boss doesn't get it." I've been there — at the edge of resigning. What pulled me back was a three-step protocol that turned the same boss into someone I now consider close.
**Step 1 — Lead with warmth.** "Hey, what did you do this weekend?" That one question solves half the problem. No conflict resolves through hostility — it just becomes a fight. Cialdini's *Influence* names the mechanic: people are more easily persuaded by people they like. Approach first; avoidance costs you more than them.
**Step 2 — Speak in facts, not feelings.** Replace "this won't work, will it?" with "last month Option A delayed eight weeks; Option B looks more efficient." Facts **diagnose a situation**. They don't attack a person. They're hard to refuse.
**Step 3 — When facts hit a wall, ask back.** "What am I missing? Why do you see A as the better path?" Genuine curiosity, not the rhetorical kind. The boss often talks themselves into the right answer — or surfaces information you didn't have. Either way, the wall comes down.

**1단계 — 호감부터 만듭니다.** "이번 주말 뭐 하셨어요?" 한 마디면 절반은 끝납니다. 적대적인 관계에서는 어떤 갈등도 풀리지 않습니다. 상대가 나에게 호감을 갖게 되는 것이 모든 협상의 시작입니다 — *설득의 심리학*(치알디니)도 그 점을 정확히 지적합니다. 싫은 사람일수록 먼저 다가가야 합니다. 내가 피하면 결국 나만 손해입니다.
**2단계 — 감정 빼고 팩트로만 말합니다.** "이건 안 되는 거 아닌가요?" 대신 "지난달 옵션 A를 했을 때 8주 딜레이가 있었으니 옵션 B가 더 효율적일 것으로 보입니다." 팩트는 상대를 비판하지 않고 **상황을 진단**합니다. 그래서 상대도 동의하기 쉽습니다.
**3단계 — 역으로 질문해서 스스로 답하게 만듭니다.** 아무리 설명해도 안 통하면, "혹시 제가 놓친 부분이 있을까요? 부장님은 왜 A라고 생각하세요?"로 돌려세웁니다. 따지는 게 아니라 정말 궁금해서 묻는 것입니다. 그러면 상대가 스스로 답을 만들어 가거나, 내가 모르던 정보가 드러납니다.
이 세 단계는 **적대자를 협력자로 바꾸는 일반 알고리즘**입니다. 메타 안에서나 밖에서나 동일하게 작동합니다.
