I've lived in the US alone since I was 15. Going from a Korean upbringing to American solitude overnight was confusing. English barely worked. I didn't know anyone. It was rough. But what I learned then is what eventually let me survive Silicon Valley. **One**: **"You have to stick out to survive."** In Korea I was taught not to stand out. In the US, if you stay quiet, you just disappear. **Two**: **"Survive on optimism."** When everything is unfamiliar and hard, the ones who *believe it'll work out* are the ones who last. **Three**: **"Network is mandatory."** Nothing happens alone.
